These are the terms you will keep hearing over and over when looking at websites of companies providing hosting, you need to understand what these terms mean to make sure you get the best deal possible!

Bandwidth

Also referred to as data transfer rate, it is the amount of data you are allowed to transfer per month. Your current web statistics program should give you a rough idea of how much bandwidth you are using at the moment. Hosting companies typically offer 10 times the bandwidth as disk space allocated. For example, if you take a disk space of 10 MB, your bandwidth will be typically 100 MB/month. Beware of companies offering unlimited bandwidth as they usually have a non-specific clause in their terms and conditions saying they may shut down your website if you use an excessive share of their web server resources. Further, the unlimited bandwidth is unlimited for all websites on the shared server and if some websites are hogging too much bandwidth, you are not even assured of your minimum rights.

Disk Space

This is the amount of physical disk space allocated to you on the web server. You can get a rough idea of the amount of disk space you may need by examining the size of all your files from your website. Do not get carried away by companies offering very large or unlimited disk space. You will never utilize it and in all probability they would be overselling, knowing fully well that most customers never utilize their full space allocation. Hosting companies offering very large disk space or unlimited disk space do overselling as a result their server is always loaded and often choke up. It is unlikely to expect quality service in such a situation.

Dedicated Hosting

Dedicated Hosting means you rent an entire web server and host as many websites as you wish. Some companies offer managed dedicated hosting which means they will take responsibility for the day to day running of your server on your behalf. If you opt for a self-managed dedicated server you would be responsible for installing and maintaining the software on the server. Generally speaking dedicated hosting is better for very large websites. For smaller web sites shared hosting will offer better value for money.
